Itachi Uchiha is the elder brother of Sasuke and the man responsible for the elimination of the Uchiha Clan six years prior to the main plot. When first introduced, he is a S-ranked rogue ninja and a member of the terrorist organization Akatsuki, which becomes the primary antagonist in Part II. Itachi is one of the more mysterious characters, making few appearances in the series and having a limited information about his background. For the majority of the series, Itachi is treated as a villain, having been responsible for the Uchiha massacre and being a member of Akatsuki. However, shortly after his death later in the series, his role as the villain is downplayed when his true background is revealed.
Itachi has the appearance of the average young adult, though he isn't very tall or muscular. He has long black hair with a ponytail and gray eyes, however most of the time they are red due to his near constantly activated Sharingan. When first introduced, he wears the Akatsuki uniform which is a black robe with red clouds on it over his regular combat clothing. Additionally, he wears his ninja forehead protector, although it has a gash going through the Konoha symbol to indicate his defection from Konoha. Back when he was still a member of ANBU, he wore the traditional ANBU combat uniform, only without the mask.
Itachi is a generally calm, soft-spoken person who tends to keep his thoughts and emotions to himself. It is because of this that he carries a mysterious atmosphere about him everywhere he goes; even those who are closest to him, such as his partner Kisame Hoshigaki, have no knowledge of his true motives. Although he is responsible for the Uchiha massacre, he is conversely generally nonviolent, trying to avoid any confrontations that would lead to combat.
 Plot Synopsis
Prior to his defection, Itachi was considered the "pride of the Uchiha," graduating ninja academy at age seven, mastering the Sharingan at age eight, becoming a Chuunin at age ten, and admitted into ANBU at age thirteen. Itachi At some point, the relationship he had with his fellow comrades as well as his family became increasingly distant. After the sudden death of Shisui Uchiha, Itachi's best friend, a few men of the Konoha Police Force (which was then ran by the Uchiha clan) attempted to interrogate Itachi. However, he suddenly became aggressive and attacked them, much to everyone's bewilderment. After receiving a warning, Itachi vanished, only to return that night to massacre the entire Uchiha Clan except for his little brother. When asked about his motives in a short dialog between him and Sasuke, he merely answered "to test his container." He continued by giving Sasuke an ultimatum which expected Sasuke to live his life in contempt of his older brother and to return to him with the eyes he bears before him (referring to the Mangekyō Sharingan). Following their short conversation, Itachi knocked out Sasuke with his Mangekyō Sharingan and disappeared. Years later, he returns to Konoha with his partner Kisame as a member of a criminal organization known as Akatsuki, however on a mission to kidnap Naruto. In their attempt to capture Naruto, Itachi and Kisame are confronted by Jiraiya and are forced to retreat.
In Part II, Itachi confronts and fights Sasuke at a fortress which the Uchiha used as a hideout facility. Although it seemed he was going to defeat Sasuke, he only managed to poke Sasuke on the forehead as he used to prior to his defection before he fell to his death.
Later on, Madara reveals that Itachi transferred his powers of the Mangekyō Sharingan into Sasuke in order to protect him from Madara, who wanted to recruit Sasuke for his insidious plot to get revenge against Konoha. Furthermore, it is also explained that Itachi killed the Uchiha clan on orders from Konoha's elders in order to prevent an Uchiha coup d'etat, therefore maintaining the peace Itachi truly wished for. Nevertheless, he couldn't bring himself to kill Sasuke, so he forced Konoha to protect Sasuke, threatening to publicize his mission otherwise. For carrying out aforementioned, Itachi reconciled his role as a criminal, never revealing to anyone the whole story and those involved and going as far as to encourage Sasuke to hate him so that he could grow stronger and avenge the Uchiha by killing him.
Itachi was considered a prodigy while he was still a ninja in Konoha, mastering even the most advanced techniques at a young age and quickly climbing up the ranks. He was able to proficiently use the Sharingan since he was eight-years-old, and later on be one of only two (at the time) to unlock the Mangekyou Sharingan, a much more potent version of the Sharingan.
 Mangekyō Sharingan
Itachi's Mangekyō Sharingan allows him to use three new abilities: Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susanoo. These three techniques are named after Japanese celestial gods; the gods of the moon, sun, and storm, respectively. Amaterasu is a technique in which a black fire is cast at Itachi's focal point and will continue to burn until the target is completely incinerated. When Itachi initially uses this technique to escape from Jiraiya's Toad Mouth Bound technique, Jiraiya describes the fire as being hotter than the sun. The second technique, Tsukuyomi, allows him to create a realistic illusion in which he can torture his opponent for what seems like days in a mere moment. This illusion can only be broken by another pure-blooded Sharingan user, granted if he/she is powerful enough. The final technique, Susanoo, conjures a large empyrean warrior which will fight on Itachi's behalf until Itachi dispels the technique or dies.
